Highways England: No plans to dual A52 east of Nottingham

A52, widening

Highways England says it will not agree to a dual carriageway on the A52 east of Nottingham, unless police declare it unsafe.

The group, which manages major road building projects, spoke after some local politicians said they want to see the road upgraded following a series of crashes in the last few months.

Cllr Kevin Greaves, Chairman of the Transport Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council, declared the authority is supportive of extending the road to cope with heavy congestion.

It would be a huge cost

But a spokesman for Highways England said: “We always priorities safety on our roads, but this particular road is not considered as dangerous.

“In order for us to take action, the road must first be classed as dangerous by the Road Safety Partnership at Nottinghamshire Police.

“It is not a particularly notorious stretch of road. We would have to investigate with official statistics, and look into the cost of making that road a dual-carriageway as that would be a huge cost.”

On Wednesday (October 21) night an HGV overturned on the stretch of road near Saxondale, with similar incidents happening on the same stretch of road in August and September.

Five people were hospitalised on October 9 in another collision, then three days later there was an accident which involved an overturned hearse.

Some councillors now want to see a route similar to the recent A453 upgrade between the M1 and Clifton, which was turned into to a dual carriageway in June at a cost of £169m.

George Davidson from Bingham Town Council has also said that congestion caused on the A52 during rush hour was “intolerable” and that the traffic and danger will grow over the next 15 years due to the development of 1,000 new houses.
