A driver who caused a woman’s death when he crashed into a car at 60mph after using his mobile phone at the wheel has been jailed for four years.
Robert Munce, 47, rammed his vehicle into the back of a blue Ford on November 11 2014.
Passenger Margaret Nile, 65, from Rotheram, died and several other cars were caught up in the collision.
Nottingham Crown Court was told Munce was driving southbound on the A1 near Newark and had failed to see traffic slowing down.
He then hit the back of Ford, and the ensuing pile-up caused damage to six cars.
The road was closed for several hours after the accident.
After being voluntarily interviewed by police, Munce was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
He admitted the charge and on Friday was sentenced to four years and three months imprisonment.
Munce, of Immingham, South Humberside, was also banned from driving for seven years.
Margaret’s family have to try and rebuilt their shattered lives
DC Paul Jaycock of Notts Police, said: “This tragic case demonstrates the devastating consequences that arose from one driver using his mobile phone whilst driving.
“Margaret Nile died because Robert Munce was needlessly distracted by his mobile phone when he should have been concentrating on driving. Sadly he cannot turn back the clock and has been imprisoned for his actions.

“Margaret’s family now have to try and rebuild their shattered lives. Their lives and arguably Munce’s life too, have changed forever.
“I would urge any driver that looks at their mobile phone when they should be fully focussed on the road ahead, to heed the lesson that Munce has been learning since 11 November 2014.”
