A campaign has been launched for knighthoods to be given to Nottingham ice skating icons Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.

Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood has made an application to the Cabinet Office, which decides each year who to recommend for the honour.

She is asking people to write letters of support to the constituency office, and several leading political and business figures have already backed the idea.

The ice dancing pair are former British, European, Olympic and World Champions who became legends in the sport with a captivating gold medal performance in the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics.

After skating to Maurice Ravel’s Bolero, they became the highest-scoring figure skaters of all time for a single programme, getting 12 perfect 6.0s and six 5.9s.

Both were born and grew up in Nottinghamshire. Jayne, 59, is from Clifton and worked in the city as an insurance clerk. Christopher, 59 is from Calverton and is a former Nottinghamshire Police constable.
