Latin to be revived in Nottingham primary schools

Latin is to be taught again in primary schools across the city as the Nottingham Latin Network for teachers is launched.

The network, provided by Network for Languages East Midlands, will help primary teachers introduce Latin into subjects such as history, English, primary languages and literacy.

Latin is the root of much of English and many other languages.

Classics for All, a national charity supporting Classics in schools, has made the curriculum change possible by funding the network.

The funding will also be contributing to a development event for teachers involved, offering practical steps to the schools who wish to deliver Latin and will focus on generating interest and excitement for the new curriculum addition.

Clodagh Cooney, manager of Network for Languages East Midlands which is run by Nottingham Trent University in the region, says Latin is still part of our lives.

She said: “Although Latin may have been overtaken by languages such as French and German in schools, it is still very much a part of our everyday life-  from the spells in Harry Potter to our laws –  and we believe in the linguistic and cultural benefits of studying Latin for all children, irrespective of background.”

Members of the network will be meeting once a term to provide updates on the progress of the classes, share best practice and share resources as well as providing tips on how to access further support in the country.

The Network for Languages is a national alliance of universities committed to excellence in teaching and language learning and supports language teachers and professionals across all sectors.

One councillor supporting the Latin initiative in Nottingham primary schools is Councillor Graham Chapman.

The linguist and deputy leader of the Council, says: “Latin extends English vocabulary through understanding word derivations and prepares children to learn modern foreign languages.

“It has enormous potential, drawing in literacy, history, geography, art, drama and philosophy, as well as helping children with maths and science vocabulary.”
