Three dead after being stabbed and van driven at pedestrians in series of Nottingham city centre incidents

Police at the scene in Milton Street, Nottingham.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after three people were killed in a series of incidents in Nottingham early on Tuesday morning.

Police were called to Ilkeston Road just after 4am where two people were found dead in the street.

Officers were then called to another incident in Milton Street where a van had attempted to run over three people. They are currently being treated in hospital.

A man has also been found dead in Magdala Road, and police say the believe the suspect stole the van from this man before the incident on Milton Street.

Pictures shared online show police carrying out an armed raid in Radford at around 12.30pm.

The University of Nottingham has confirmed two of those who died are students from the university.

A warning some people may find some of the content distressing.

18.52 We’re ending our live coverage for this evening. Further updates are available on our social media channels.

Here’s everything we know so far;

  • Three people have died following a series of incidents in the early hours of Tuesday morning across Nottingham city centre.
  • Police were first called to Ilkeston Road at around 4am where two people, both aged 19, were found dead in the street after being stabbed.
  • A short time later another incident unfolded in Milton Street where the driver of a stolen van had attempted to run over three people. As a result, one man is in hospital in a critical condition while two others are believed to have suffered minor injuries.
  • A man in his 50s was also found dead with knife injuries in Magdala Road. Police believe the suspect stole the van from this man before the Milton Street incident.
  • The van was then stopped on Maple Street where a man was tasered and detained by officers on suspicion of murder.
  • Two of the people who died were students at the University of Nottingham.
  • Notts Police are working with counter terror police but say this is routine in the circumstances and they are “keeping an open mind” as to the motive for the killings.

18.28 Notts Police Chief Constable Kate Meynell has given an update to the media outside Byron House, Nottingham City Centre.

She says police now believe the van the suspect drove at people on Milton Street had been stolen shortly beforehand from the man found dead on Magdala Road.

16.58 More from Nottingham City Council Leader David Mellen, who has been speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

“This is a really terrible day for Nottingham, these incidents are really shocking,” Cllr Mellen said.

“There are families who are mourning their loved ones, and others who are worried about their loved ones in hospital.

“So our thoughts and prayers are with all those people and with our emergency services.

“What we are assured from the police is they have arrested someone and they don’t think anyone else is involved in these incidents, so our city is safe.

“People do not need to hesitate to come into the city this evening and tomorrow as they go about their daily routines.

“This is a city which is diverse, a city where people get on with each other and we will stand against this violence.”

16.20 Two of the people who died in this morning’s incidents were University of Nottingham students, the university has just confirmed in a statement released via Twitter.

15.02 Notts Police Chief Constable Kate Meynell has also commented further in that statement, saying while they are working with counter-terror police, they are doing so routinely to establish the facts.

Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: “This is a tragic series of events which has led to the lives of three innocent people being taken and left another member of the public in a critical condition in hospital.

“My thoughts are with all the families affected by this shocking incident, and we will be working extremely hard to understand exactly what has happened.

“We are at the early stages of the investigation and need to determine the motives behind these attacks and will keep the public updated as soon as we are able to say more.

“We are keeping an open mind as we investigate the circumstances surrounding these incidents and are working alongside Counter Terrorism Policing to establish the facts – as we would normally do in these types of circumstances.

“We do have a man in custody who has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Currently, we do not believe there is anyone else involved in this incident.

“It is safe to go into the city centre but there are a number of streets that will remain closed including Ilkeston Road, Magdala Street, Milton Street and Maple Street. This is so officers can gather evidence in order to understand what has happened.”

14.48 In their statement, Notts Police also say they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incidents;

Police have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of murder and he remains in police custody.

A number of major roads in the city centre will remain closed as a thorough police investigation is underway.

Currently, police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attacks.

A team of dedicated detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attacks.

14.42 An update has just come in from Notts Police, saying they are “keeping an open mind” over the motive for this morning’s incidents.

Their statement reads;

Police are keeping an ‘open mind’ over the motive of a city attack which has left three people dead – but at this time believe there is no one else outstanding in connection with the incidents.

Police were called to Ilkeston Road just after 4am (Tuesday 13 June) after two people had been killed.

Officers were then called to another incident in Milton Street where a van had attempted to run over three people.

One man is in hospital in a critical condition while two others are believed to have suffered minor injuries.

A man was also found dead in Magdala Road shortly afterwards.

14.02 More coming in now about the van inside a police cordon on Bentinck Road, Radford. It’s believed this is where the 31-year-old man was arrested. Pictures show damage to the vehicle, which has been left in the road with one of the doors open.

13.34 We’re getting reports of an armed raid in the Ilkeston Road area. We’ve been sent this image shared online at around 12.30 today. We’ve not been able to speak directly to the person who shared it yet, but we’ve been able to verify that it was taken on Balfour Road, at the corner with Ilkeston Road, and clearly shows a very large number of armed police officers surrounding an address.

12.45 The Victoria Centre, close to where the Milton Street incident took place, has remained open this morning. We’ve just had a statement from a spokesperson there.

A spokesman said: “We are monitoring the ongoing situation in Nottingham city centre carefully and are continuing to liaise with Nottinghamshire Police.

“The centre does remain open, with some pedestrian and car park entrances affected by the police cordon.

“However, we are urging people to follow the advice of Nottinghamshire Police and to avoid the parts of the city centre that have been impacted.”

12.41 We’ve now also had a statement from David Mellen, the Labour leader of Nottingham City Council.

He said added: “I am shocked and saddened by these horrific deaths.

“My thoughts and prayers are with those who knew and loved the three people who have died and those who have been injured, and to the communities where they lived.

“Ours is an overwhelmingly peaceful and tolerant city where people get along with one another and it’s incomprehensible that such dreadful violence has happened here.

“I’m grateful to the police for swiftly making an arrest and for all the emergency services responding to this tragic situation and keeping us safe.”

11.20 Local MPs have been reacting to the news, as reported by Joe Locker, from the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Alex Norris, Labour MP for Nottingham North, described the situation as “awful”.

A joint statement has been issued by Mr Norris and his fellow Nottingham MPs, Lilian Greenwood, who represents the south, and Nadia Whittome, who represents the east.

The statement says: “Our city has been devastated by the deaths of three people this morning.

“Our thoughts and prayers and with the families and loved ones of those who have died and those injured.
