Midland Mainline electrification to be ‘un-paused’
Nottingham train passengers will get shorter journeys to other cities after the Government re-started a plan to upgrade the Midland Mainline.
The electrification of the route was put on hold in the summer as part of re-planning Government spending.
Officials said they were “pausing” the project for a review.
Now the scheme has been revived after the Department for Transport said it was needed to “help ensure that every part of Britiain benefits from a growing economy”.
Complete by 2023, the work will cut travelling times from Nottingham to Derby, Leicester, Sheffield and London.
Secretary of State for Transport Patrick McLoughlin said: “Connecting up the great cities of the North is part of our plan to build a Northern powerhouse.”
Chairman of Network Rail, Sir Peter Hendy said: “People can expect more services and faster journeys.”
