National drop in swimming: Nottingham bucks trend by taking the plunge

A survey by Sport England has shown that a quarter of a million fewer people are going swimming but this is not the case in Nottingham.

Attendance at the city council’s nine leisure centre pools rose by 11 per cent between 2012 and 2014.

Along with the rise in attendance, there has been a substantial increase in the number of children taking swimming lessons.

“Swimming is an important skill that saves lives.”

Charlotte Turnball, Owner of Quackers Swimming Club

“We’ve had parents come and tell us their child has fallen in the water if they’ve been in a boat or by a river and they’ve just turned round and swam back to land.”

“Doing swimming also opens up the chance to do more watersports from canoeing to jet skiing.
