National Grid say there is no clear time frame for the completion of emergency roadworks which have caused rush-hour traffic chaos in Nottingham.

Long delays built up on the A60 London Road and Mansfield Road into the city on Monday morning (March 13) after one lane was closed on Canal Street to repair a gas main run by National Grid.

Bus services were held up across Nottingham and motorists reported delays of 30 minutes on regular commuting routes.

Canal Street has since been closed to westbound traffic and a diversion via Queen’s Drive put in place in an attempt to ease congestion.

Delays were reported again on Tuesday, with inbound traffic queuing back onto Mansfield Road due to congestion on Huntingdon Street connected to the closure.

A spokesman for National Grid said: “Gas readings have been detected in ducts in the road. Engineers have been working since last night to repair a leaking joint on a pipe and to trace and repair several other leaking joints.

“It is not yet known how long the repairs will take; however, staff will be working 24 hours a day.

“The work is taking place at the junction of Trent Street. We are sorry for any delays. Every effort is being made to complete these repairs as soon as possible.”

When asked if the work was likely to continue into tomorrow the spokesman added they “expect the work to continue into tomorrow [Tuesday] and over the next few days”.

Nottingham City Transport said services on Monday were badly affected, with delays of more than 25 minutes on Lilac, Red and Pathfinder Services.

A spokesman for the company said: “At peak times this will cause major congestion to London Road, Lower Parliament Street, Huntingdon Street and Pennyfoot Street.

“Due to the lane closure, traffic becomes congested along London Road and Trent Bridge, which results in delays on Navy and Green services.”
