Nottingham City Council spending £200,000 demolishing dilapidated garages to free up parking spaces

More parking spaces will be freed up across Nottingham when the city council demolishes three dilapidated garage sites.

Six garages in Crampton Court will be knocked down alongside eight in Thistledown Road, Clifton, and a further 50 in Rosegarth Walk, Basford.

They are all of “poor quality” and it is no longer sustainable to manage them, the authority says.

The work will cost just over £207,000, but the Labour-run council says it will free up much-needed parking for residents in each area.

Nottingham City Homes (NCH), the managing agent for Nottingham City Council’s housing stock, has been conducting reviews of property including garage sites.

“Of the sites reviewed across the city, three have been highlighted for demolition and clearance,” a council report says.

“There is a shortage of local of adequate parking space in some areas of the city and very little communal land available.

“Continuing to manage all existing garage sites, repairing damaged stock and upgrading security to sites was rejected as this is not cost effective in the long-term.”

The work will be funded through the use of Housing Revenue Account (HRA) money, a pot of cash which can only be used for work on the council’s housing stock and its tenants.

The demolition work in Bestwood will cost £21,099.10, while work in Clifton will cost £49,337.75.

The most significant demolition project to demolish 50 garages in Basford will cost £136,726.70.

All three sites will be cleared and tarmac will be laid ready for use for parking.

Owners of the garages will be offered alternative property nearby.

The council adds: “Tenants of garages earmarked for demolition have been offered alternative garages within the close vicinity.

“Vacant land and future car parking land will at all times continue to be managed by Nottingham City Homes and, from the April 1, 2023, the in-house NCC Housing Management Service, to minimise anti-social behaviour and manage any fly-tipping issues this may present.”

It is expected the work will be completed by the end of the 2022 to 2023 financial year.
