Nottingham MENCAP volunteer retires after 38 years

Joan George who has volunteered for 38 years for the Nottingham MENCAP Getaway Club will be sorely missed by members as she retires.

Joan, 77, who lives in Nottingham has been a life long volunteer at the Nottingham MENCAP branch since she moved to Nottingham with her daughter Amanda George, who has learning difficulties.

She started back in 1977 at the Junior Gettways accompanying club members on week long holidays, she then moved onto the senior Gettaway club, progressing from volunteer mum to chairperson.

Joan has successfully run the club with over 100 members, enjoying the Tuesday and Wednesday social club, organising club night entertainment , themed discos and days out for 60+ members

Paul Milward, club leader presented Mrs George with a brooch, bunch of flowers and a framed photo of the last club trip.

He said: “We hope Joan will continue to call in when she drops her daughter off on club nights.”

Joan will be sorely missed at the club, by all the volunteers and club users.
