Nottingham students discuss unlit Southwell route with politicians

Nottingham Trent University students met with local politicians on Thursday evening to talk about improving street lighting after the issue was raised in the Notts Student Manifesto.

Students, MPs and councillors walked together after sunset to demonstrate the poor visibility on the road between NTU’s Brackenhurst campus and Southwell town centre.

Brackenhurst students have been complaining about feeling unsafe on the busy route when walking or cycling along it in the dark.

NTU’s student union president, Marcus Boswell, said the experience was very pleasing to witness.

He said:

It was a very promising sign of things to come.

“The students told their stories and shared experiences of the unsafe nature of their trips to and from campus, which were wholeheartedly received by the Councillors.

“Discussions of what options there are to improve safety continued for several hours.”

Nottingham Trent University’s student union created a video called ‘Light the way to Brackenhurst’ where student union team members were filmed cycling along the route in an effort to highlight the dangers of the unlit road.

You can watch the rest of the ‘Light the way Brackenhurst’ video here.

The student manifesto was launched earlier in the year and compiled by students from Nottingham Trent University, University of Nottingham and New College Nottingham.

It outlines the main issues that students in Nottingham want their local parliamentary candidates to acknowledge as part of their campaigns in the run up to this year’s General Election.

NTU’s student union is actively encouraging student and politician interaction and is urging all students to register to vote in this year’s general election on their website.
