Nottingham’s first independent doughnut shop has announced plans to open a second store in Derby.

The Nottingham Doughnut Company has revealed it plans to open a new store in Derby city centre.

Shop owners Megan Scaddan, 23, and fiancé Wade Smith, 24, have already made an offer on a property in Sadler Gate.

Wade said: “We’re over the moon to be opening a new shop – business has just exploded.

“We chose to open in Derby because it is local and a lot of our customers are from there.

“We’ve found an amazing building that is fully furnished and has two floors so we can create a full on café experience.”

The shop offers over 50 flavours including Nutella, Lemon Meringue, Cherry Bakewell and Red Velvet.

The couple began making doughnuts in Megan’s home kitchen in Silverdale and selling them via Facebook and on a market stall at weekends.

In November 2015, they opened their first shop in Long Row, just off Market Square, and now sell around 7,000 doughnuts each week.

The cakes are produced in a bakery unit in Colwick which employs ten staff.

Wade said: “Our plan is to potentially open a couple more shops this year – we’re thinking maybe Leicester is next.

“We just want to keep making more doughnuts and keep opening shops until we’ve had enough.

“People have suggested franchising but we’re not really looking into that yet.”

The shop currently offers over 50 flavours including Nutella, Lemon Meringue, Cherry Bakewell and its most popular, Red Velvet, all of which is made out of vegan dough.

The 'long john' is one of the new flavours on offer this month.

Wade said: “We’re always thinking of new flavours – the inspiration comes from everything we eat.

“We’re going back to New York in February to check out some more doughnut places and I’m going to spend two days working at the Peter Pan Bakery.

“It will be great to experience working in a real American doughnut shop and hopefully pick up some ideas and tips.”

The shop’s doughnuts are already on sale in local coffee shops 200 Degrees, in Flying Horse Walk, and Toast, on Derby Road, Lenton.

The couple hope to find out about their new property next month and have their Derby store up and running by March.
