Nottingham’s gardeners compete to be blooming lovely

For over 80 years Nottingham City Homes has run a garden competition for tenants in a friendly rivalry to see who has the best greenery.

Split into various categories, anyone on a Nottingham City Homes estate can enter. It’s main aim, to improve neighbourhoods around the city.

Event organiser Wenda Leslie hoped tenants taking part would draw a lot from the experience. She said: “The quality is phenomenal. All the people that have entered have put a lot of time and effort into their gardens. The quality of the plants, they’re disease free, it’s all just wonderful”.

But it’s not all about beauty, the scheme encourages amateur gardeners to attract wildlife such as bees and grow their own food.

Previous competition winner Sandra Whitehouse enjoyed the freedom of being able to plant flowers while keeping her mind active.

“It’s a relaxing pastime and people should take it up. It’s not difficult to pull a few weeds up and put a few seeds in,” she said.

The prize of £100 will be rewarded to the winner when the competition closes in early August. It is hoped the scheme will attract even more competitors in the future.
