Photographs taken by homeless people who were given cameras by a support group are being showcased in a Nottingham exhibition.
People Of The Streets, a student-run organisation at the University of Nottingham, has provided several people with disposable cameras in collaboration with Kodak and Boots.
Fifteen photographers took more than 200 photos around the city over two weeks, snapping what they see to show their view of Nottingham.
With support from local help centres Emmanuel House and Canaan Trust, ‘Stories Of The Streets‘ gives homeless people the opportunity for “creative expressions” and to tell their stories when the exhibition opens at the Broadmarsh shopping centre.
Charles Kerr, managing director of People of The Streets, hopes the exhibition will show homelessness is about more than someone sleeping in the street: “We really want to humanise homelessness as an issue and provide a way for people to help the homeless community not just in Nottingham but across the country.”
Operations director Alex Greenhalgh added: “We hope this exhibition gives people some insight into the talents of the homeless community, through their eyes.”
As well as the photographs being displayed, framed prints and care packages for those in need will also be available to buy at the exhibition.
Proceeds will be put towards a scheme to fund accommodation and meals for the photographers.
There are also plans to expand the scheme to other cities, including Brighton and Manchester.
Stories Of The Streets launches on Friday 17th November, 6pm at the Broadmarsh shopping centre and runs until Christmas Eve.
