Nottinghamshire company making 10,000 calorie-plus cakes made entirely out of fudge

A Notts mum is making cakes made entirely out of fudge, which she says contain more than 10,000 calories each and could feed a whole party.

Laura Parker, who owns The Phudge Co., started making fudge in December 2015.

“I was working full-time and I’ve got two little boys with birthdays in the same week as Christmas so it’s a bit of an expensive time,” she said.

“I always wanted to be self-employed but I didn’t know what to do, then I made fudge as Christmas presents and everyone said it was amazing.

“It was a light bulb moment, I thought ‘this could be it’.”

She then spent months playing with recipes, designing logos and contacting the council for hygiene checks before launching her business in April 2016.

In January 2017, she embarked on a new journey- making cakes out of nothing but fudge.

“Because I follow a lot of wedding pages on Instagram, I saw weird and wonderful cakes, like cheese wedding cakes,” she added.

“I decided I wanted to give it a go with fudge and they’re doing really well.”

Each cake weighs at least 2kg, and Laura said it’s more than likely they have over 10,000 calories each.

“It’s all fudge, people can’t get their head around it and I get a lot of people contacting me and wanting to clarify if it’s all fudge and if the cake is just covered in fudge.”

However, she thinks they’re much better than normal cakes.

“A normal cake lasts a few days and then it goes stale, whereas cakes made out of fudge can keep for up to two weeks.

“People can buy them for parties and just cut people a slice of fudge.”

It takes two days to make a simple cake, but if people want more details it can take much longer.

“It’s a relatively similar process to making normal fudge but you use different tins to set fudge in.

“Each layer of the cake is a normal batch so there’s quite a lot of fudge in it and there’s about 15 jars of fudge in a cake.”

They’re proving popular for birthdays, but Laura has also received orders for weddings as well.

Her aim is to eventually sell them in supermarkets.

“It’s something different, and people always want something different,” she added.
