Nottinghamshire education chief made a Dame in Queen’s honours

Education leaders, scientists, a parish council clerk and a police CCTV expert are among the Nottinghamshire heroes who have made the Queen’s New Year Honours list.

Susan Jowett, executive principal of the George Spencer Academy, Stapleford, has been made a Dame.

Also chief executive of the Spencer Academies Trust, she is credited with leading the school to retaining its “outstanding” Ofsted rating in May 2015 after it had converted to being an academy.

The trust has expanded to become a multi-academy trust of ten primary and secondary schools in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire.

I am deeply moved and overwhelmed

She said: “I am deeply moved and overwhelmed. It is a privilege to be recognised for something I love and am passionate about.

“This is a great accolade for George Spencer Academy, the lead school within the Spencer Academies Trust, and a tribute to all the students, teachers, support staff, leaders and governors with whom I have worked over the last 40 years and from whom I have learned so much.”

A key figure in Nottingham’s long association with the development of the MRI scanner, he and the centre are using the technology for dementia research, offering the prospect of earlier diagnosis and individualised treatment.

Among a host of other local recipients is Pauline Jarvis, a CCTV evidence specialist for Notts Police, who is awarded an OBE.

There’s also an MBE for Barrie Thomas, chair of the board of trustees at the Torch Academy Gateway Trust, and the local empire medal list includes Peter Goulding, clerk to Carlton-in-Lindrick Parish Council.
