A Nottinghamshire shop has been told to pull a child’s pirate costume from sale after tests found it poses a fire risk.

Nottinghamshire County Council said the outfit’s hat had ties which carried on burning for 18 seconds in tests.

UK safety standards say clothing should not stay alight for more tan two seconds once it catches fire.

The authority said it had now asked the shop to stop selling it, but did not name the business.

The costume was among eight sent to a laboratory earlier this month by the council’s trading standards department.

It follows high-profile cases of material on Halloween costumes bursting into flames when exposed to candles and lit matches.

In one case, the daughter of TV presenter Claudia Winkleman was left badly burned when her Halloween costume caught fire.

Councillor Glynn Gilfoyle, the council’s community safety chairman, said: “We hope these tests offer reassurance to the public that we are not only actively carrying out product surveillance but will always follow up on products which do not meet all the relevant safety standards.”
