Notts County Ladies defender Laura Bassett played a starring role in the England women’s win against Norway, beating them 2-1 in Ottawa to reach the last eight in the Women’s world cup.
Their win was the first time the lionesses have ever won a knock out game in a world cup, setting up a quarter-final tie with Canada.
After a shaky first half by England, Norway took the lead in the 54th minute by Solveig Gulbrandsen forcing lionesses boss Mark Sampson to make a change, bringing on Jill Scott in place of Fran Kirby.
Scott made an immediate impact, winning a corner which Steph Houghton nodded in.
England then completed the turnaround with 14 minutes to go when right-back Lucy Bronze found the top corner from the edge of the area.
England held on to record a historical victory and a meeting with Canada in Vancouver.
Laura Bassett’s fellow Notts players Alex Greenwood, Carly Telford and Ellen White were all unused substitutes.
