Are you an established journalist who enjoys making a difference and reaching audiences in lots of different ways?

Notts TV’s excellent News Editor is heading to a role at a national title, so we’re now looking for someone new to produce and edit our flagship daily TV programme and online platforms.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the right person to play a crucial role in the channel’s ongoing expansion and development, and would suit someone with a background in news either in broadcasting or online who wants to work for a modern, ambitious TV channel and online publisher.

Central to your role will be the production of Notts Today, our daily live news and chat show for the city and county. The programme’s aim is to deliver the ‘good to know and need to know’ to the audience each day, always with a distinct Notts flavour.

Reporting to the Channel Editor, you’ll manage and work alongside an Assistant Producer, (AP) setting a fast pace and meeting daily deadlines for the show’s production. Working with the AP, you’ll source stories and guests, and write engaging scripts.

You’ll help curate and work from our news diary, and use broadcast running order software to ensure scripts and timings are accurate.

An excellent writer, you’ll have great legal and general news knowledge, plus the ability to report with balance and careful impartiality on a wide range of issues.

You’ll also news edit a multi-talented team of both broadcast and online journalists to help them cover both the big stories and ones with a unique human interest and community feel. Through our partnership with Nottingham Trent University, you’ll also help influence our unique industry training, and supervise the work and development of students on attachment or undertaking training at the channel.

Ideally you will have some experience of managing a team, and have a proven track record of being able to tell a broad mixture of stories, from the serious and complex, to the inspirational and light-hearted.

Applications from a broadcaster or online professional who has some newsdesk and or production experience, who is ready to take on more responsibility and try new things, will also be considered.

Working with the wider team, you’ll also have a strong understanding of online audiences and different platforms. You’ll identify material and opportunities, and post regularly on our social accounts across Facebook and Twitter in particular. Occasionally you’ll edit and upload stories for our website. While not essential, good knowledge of video editing and associated software is a distinct advantage.

On occasion, you will also direct and edit our team of BBC-funded Local Democracy Reporters, who write stories covering local politics which can be used by local media partners across the region.

You’ll also represent Notts TV at key internal and external events, and sometimes stand in for the Channel Editor in their absence.

Notts TV’s open plan multi-team newsroom is inside Antenna, a creative business hub in the heart of Nottingham city centre’s Creative Quarter. Besides our office and live TV studio, there are shared meeting spaces with the latest technology. Also on site is a restaurant and bar with discounts for employees of tenant businesses.

This is a full-time role typically covering daytime shifts Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend and evening work. You’ll earn a highly competitive salary, plus company pension, and an employee benefits package. Our offices and TV studio are fully accessible.

Notts TV is seen as one of the leading members of the local TV Network, broadcast across the city and county on Freeview 7, BT 7, Virgin 159 and on demand via our popular news and video website. Our 24/7 output is almost entirely Notts-made and includes a live news show every week day, plus sport, music, heritage and arts programming. On television, we reach 250,000 viewers a month, and more than 75,000 people follow us on social.

Since July 2021, Notts TV has also been home to the Local Democracy Reporting Service for Nottinghamshire, a team of journalists funded by BBC licence fee to cover local politics.

For the right candidate, this is a chance to take a leading role in directing the channel as it strives to set an example as a sustainable, highly professional and independent regional media operation.
