Paddy Tipping says people want “bobbies and not buildings” as Carlton police station closes

Carlton Police Station is to close next April due to a £54 million budget reduction.

The cuts mean the area’s PCSOs will move to a local ambulance station on Manor Road.

The move is expected to save Nottinghamshire police £147,000 a year – Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping said it was a necessary sacrifice.

“This will save us money, locally-based, in the centre of the area. This is a commitment we have made and we are proud that we have honoured it,” he said.

“There has been a decrease in the number of officers on patrol and the property was far too big for the needs of the police force, it seems that remaining in the current property is not a cost effective decision.”

He went on to say that the move will not result in a drop in policing standards in the area.

“We will see the same number of PCSOs in the area, there will be no change to policing standards but budget cuts will be met and the money saved can be reinvested elsewhere into the budget,” added Mr Tipping.

He added his belief is it is more important to keep officer and policing numbers up and reduce buildings.

He said he was “well aware” that there is concern within the community that the building might become an eyesore with two run-down pubs close by, but he hopes that this will not be the case.

Mr Tipping said: “There has been discussion with Gelding Borough Council and a lot of discussion with planners about trying to bring new vitality to Carlton and Carlton square.”
