Nottingham is the latest city to join Safe Place – a free mobile app helping people targeted by hate crime to find a ‘safe public place’.

The app was launched on Monday (16 October), the start of National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

It lists 69 places around Notts where people can go when they feel threatened.

Among the city centre locations are National Ice centre, the NET travel centre on King Street, Nottingham Central Library on Angel Row, Base 51 on Castle Gate, and Theatre Royal Concert Hall on Upper Parliament Street.

The scheme is supported by Nottinghamshire Police Crime and Commissioner Paddy Tipping, plus Nottingham Mencap and city-based business Tornado Gloves – who sponsored the project.

Mr Tipping said he hopes to expand the app across the county.

The ‘safe places’ associated with the scheme have visible stickers to reassure indiviuals that trained staff are available.

Government figures published on Tuesday (October 17) show 1,264 hate crimes were recorded in Nottinghamshire in the 12 months to April, compared with 911 the previous year – a rise of more than 25 per cent.

The app can be downloaded free from the App Store or Google Play.
