Officers cordoned off almost the entire length of Overdale Road.

Police cordoned off Overdale Road and part of Thorndale Road, and officers were seen searching in wheelie bins.

People living in houses inside the cordon were being signed in and out of the scene by officers.

Others living nearby said they surprised at what had happened in a street not known for trouble.

Police officers spent most of Wednesday morning combing the street.

Laura Dzirvinskis, who lives around the corner, said: “The first me and my mum heard was when the police came round, I was oblivious.  It’s not had much impact on us today as obviously we didnt know it had happened.”

Another nearby resident, Albert Barber, said: “I didn’t hear a thing myself but I do think it’s unusual. It’s pretty quiet and no trouble around here usually.”

Another man who asked not to be named said: “I missed it but my next door neighbour said he had heard the noise. The first thing I noticed was police vans pulling up just after 5pm.”

Overdale Road is a street of semi-detached houses close to Stockhill Lane and Stockhill Fire Station.
