A block of Victorian toilets on the Victoria Embankment in Nottingtham have been given grade II listed building status by Historic England.

The award has been made in recognition of how well preserved they are, as they’ve retained almost all of their original features and fittings from the Victorian era.

The toilet block, dating back to 1905, makes up a small group of recognised historic buildings in the area; this includes gates to the Embankment and the Embankment pub.

Vice-chairman of Nottingham Civic Society, Ian Wells, says the listed building was a prototype for buildings like it around the country.

“They are a very, very important group – it means it has national importance,” he said.

“It means it has a quality to it’s architecture which is not only important locally but stands out well with the national architecture of the period.

“The work that has to be done to it has to have special permission and it has to be done very sensitively.

“We have got some good stuff here and fortunately Historic England are interested in seeing the list expand.”
