A Bulwell man has been jailed for eight years after repeatedly attacking a pensioner in a shop before stealing a pouch of tobacco worth £8.

Leon Bryan threw a 63-year-old costumer to the ground over and over again until he could not get up, leaving him with cuts and bruises.

Bryan then tried to steal a pouch of tobacco from the man but when unsuccessful he was seen grabbing a pouch of tobacco from the shop counter.

The incident happened at Premier Stores on Ruffold Walk, Buwell on 28 May.

Bryan admitted robbery and was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday 7 October after pleading guilty on August 12.

As well as his eight-year jail term he was ordered to pay a £170 victim surcharge.

After Bryan was jailed, Det Con Charlotte Rolling of Notts Police said: “This was a completely unprovoked and extremely violent and sustained attack on an elderly member of the public who was just buying a few bits and bobs from his local shop.

“What Bryan subjected this man to was horrifying. The bravery of the victim, who has shown courage both during the incident and throughout the course of the investigation, should be praised.” She added.

The unprovoked incident was caught on CCTV footage and showed the victim not even trying to defend himself during Bryan’s assault.
