Robot Wars: The Notts engineer who kept the show’s spirit alive

At the height of its fame the TV show Robot Wars attracted millions of viewers and people travelled from all over the world to take part.

It was filmed in Notts, at the now-closed RAF Newton, before it had what many thought would be its last airing on BBC 2 in 2004.

But now executives have announced the cult classic will return later this year.

But since the first incarnation of the show finished, Robot fighting has been kept alive by Carlton engineer John Findlay, who was the creator of the ‘Ripper’ robot from the last series.

The machine became infamous for its gas-powered flipper, which throws opponents up to 12 feet in the air.

Since the show ended on television, John has travelled the world taking the robot to international live battle events, and involving it in education projects.

It’s sort of taken over my life

John said: “When the show finished were the robots going to rust away n sheds? No, we got them out there and started the live tour.”

“We go into schools with them and promote engineering, it’s sort of taken over my life.”
