Controversial comedian Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown has booked a new gig in Ashfield after he was banned from playing at a council-run venue in Kirkby.

Fans can now see the 71 year-old at the Grosvenor Rooms, in Church Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield on October 9.

The performer was due to appear at Festival Hall, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, on October 22 but venue owner Ashfield District Council cancelled the gig.

The council said it was because it “did not wish to be associated” with the comedian.

Brown divides opinion on the comedy circuit and is famous for his sarcastic blue humour.

The local authority’s decision prompted an angry reaction from sections of the public and Brown’s manager, Steven Lloyd.

Hundreds signed a petition demanding that the council overturn its decision.

The Yorkshireman is thought to have played to 1.5 million people on three continents in a career stretching five decades.

Speaking to Notts TV News, his agent Steven Lloyd said: “We’re absolutely over the moon, the venue ticks all the boxes and they’ve been great.

“It’s sightly smaller than the festival hall but that’s irrelevant.

“Sometimes it’s about proving a point. People should be allowed to see what they want to see because everyone has the right to free choice.

“It’s the whole marmite debate isn’t it? But we’re just happy that Roy has the opportunity to perform in Nottinghamshire for all the people that want to see him.”
