Nigel Hawkins, head of culture and libraries at Nottingham city council, said: “It’s always very vibrant with the Christmas light switch on we expect a large crowd.”

Saturday’s switch-on will start at 5pm with dancing elves, a choir and other attractions to keep the crowds entertained.

It’s always a great atmosphere

Nigel Hawkins said: “Normally we have between five to six thousand people attend the Christmas light switch on so it is very busy and we encourage people to come down early, it’s always a great atmosphere.

“People travel into Nottingham to see the Winter wonderland which means we have more shoppers which important for the city retail. When people come down and see the market it makes them feel like they are ready for Christmas.”
