Sneinton shooting victim ‘targeted at pre-arranged meeting’

Video: Police cordoned off a large part of Colwick Road on Saturday

A man shot twice in an attack in Sneinton may have been targeted at a pre-arranged meeting.

The 25-year-old is still in a serious condition at the Queen’s Medical Centre after the incident on Saturday night in woodland between Colwick Road and Sneinton Boulevard.

A police cordon is still in place around the scene, which has closed off Colwick Road in both directions near Port Arthur Road and Colwick Road level crossing.

Det Supt Rob Griffin said on Monday officers now believe the shooting may have happened at a “pre-arranged” meeting.

He added: “We have undertaken an extensive investigation and, whilst in its early stages, we are confident that the threat to the local community of Sneinton is low.”

The victim was left lying injured in the woodland after being shot in the back and one leg. The weapon used is believed to have been a shotgun.

Detectives are are asking for witnesses to come forward, particularly anyone who saw a blue motorbike in area around the time of the attack.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of attempted murder.

Det Supt Griffin added: “We remain-open minded and are looking at several lines of enquiry at this time. We would not rule out further arrests in relation to this incident.

“As you might expect, there will be an increased police presence in the areas around Colwick Road and Sneinton Boulevard and additional patrols are planned.

“Thankfully this is a very rare occurrence in Nottingham and we are working very hard to tackle those responsible. Our priority will remain the safety of our communities and we will be here, as always, when you need us.”

An ambulance and police were called to the scene at around 8.45pm on Saturday and the victim was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

Det Supt Griffin added: “We understand that a blue Yamaha R6 motorcycle with two occupants, both wearing helmets, parked on Sneinton Boulevard near to the entrance of Sneinton Wood. The movements of this motorcycle leading up to the time it was parked is of interest to us.

“Between 8.35pm and 8.50pm officers believe two shots were fired within the wooded area, on the path between Colwick Road and Sneinton Boulevard.”
