Dormice released into woodland and nature reserves across Nottinghamshire are “thriving” Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust have said.

In June 2014, 42 dormice were released in Eaton Wood Reserve as part of an ongoing project to boost population levels.

More than 200 nest boxes were placed within the woodland, allowing the dormice population to beĀ observed as part of the national Dormouse Monitoring Programme.

Overall, 19 dormice were recorded with a number of young pups among them, proving that the dormice have successfully bred within the woodland.

Chair of the Nottinghamshire Dormouse Group, Lorna Griffiths said: “I’m overjoyed that the dormice appear to be doing so well and are settling into their new home.

“Thanks to the support of the Wildlife Trust and the hard work of all the volunteers, the dormouse has finally returned to Nottinghamshire.”

The overall goal is for the dormice to become well established in the woods of the county and eventually spread across the countryside.
