Thieves stole with £1,700 worth of tools from a Sherwood family – leaving a dad unable to work.

Ian McLeod, a self-employed sub contractor and electrician, had his van broken into on Monday night (June 12) and made the discovery the following morning.

The van was parked on his drive in Danethorpe Vale and five power drills, a radio, batteries and containers were taken – meaning Mr McLeod could not go to work on Tuesday.

“I was shocked, angry and the main thing was I needed to go to work to earn a living,” he said.

“Not only did I not earn any money yesterday, I have got to replace the tools because I do not want it to happen again,” he said.

“I have got to think about security on my vehicle and potentially CCTV in my house.”

Mr McLeod, 46, is the father of three daughters and says his youngest, six, was left frightened because she feared the thieves might come into the house.

“I heard her talking to her mum and ask ‘if the horrible thieves are going to come’”, he added.

“It’s easy to replace tools but when something like this happens and affects your kids initially you are angry,” he added.

A friend of the family has let Mr McLeod borrow a drill set to get him “up and running” to earn some money and buy replacements for the tools that were stolen.

Five drills and a jigsaw were taken, worth around £1,700 second hand – which originally cost Mr McLoud £2,500.

Among the stolen tools was a Makita 110-volt drill, Makita Combi Drill and a Bosch 36-volt SDS drill.

Mr McLeod added: “Today I can manage but there are certain types of jobs I won’t be able to do because I haven’t got the right power tool; jobs I could’ve done if I had the right tools.

“The majority of the tools you don’t use every day but leave them in the van for convenience in case you do need them.”

He continued: “I found out I wasn’t insured. I used to take my power tools out of the van each day religiously, but as you work further and further away you get back later and feel you can’t be bothered and end up leaving them in [the van].

“Eventually you leave them in there naturally and add to it. You never think it’s going to happen to yourself.”

Notts Police are investigating and say no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 107 of 13 June.
