Thousands of homes east and north of Nottingham have finally had their water supplies restored after a major pipe burst and sank a hole in the road in Epperstone.

Villages and towns including Radcliffe on Trent, Bingham, East Bridgford, Upper Saxondale and Flintham were affected.

Supplier Severn Trent delivered emergency supplies to people with medical conditions or other special circumstances.

The mains pipe failed in Epperstone early on Saturday morning, leaving a car sunk in a large hole in the road.

At first Severn Trent said At first it said it could not provide a time scale for the repair, but in a 4pm update the company said it hoped to have water back on by Sunday evening as work continued on the 24-inch wide broken pipe.

Most customers reported having their water restored by 11pm.

In a statement the firm said: “It is possible that, once it returns the water might be discoloured. Although unappealing, we have no reason to believe there is any risk to your health, however we understand that while the supply is discoloured you may choose not to drink the water.

“We’d like to apologise to everyone who’s been affected by today’s issues and can assure everyone that we’re working hard to get the supply back as quickly as possible.”

Several local supermarkets sold out of bottled water and some people took to Twitter and Facebook to vent their frustration.

Severn Trent added anyone with an urgent problem should contact the company on 0800 783 4444.
