Around 2,500 fewer people are claiming job seeker’s allowance in Nottinghamshire than at this time last year.

It represents a fall of around 18 per cent in the city and county, with unemployment across the UK dropping to a seven-year low.

And in the last month alone, unemployment fell by five per cent in Nottinghamshire compared to a national 0.8 per cent drop.

However Nottingham North Labour MP Graham Allen reckons that the statistics don’t match up with his constituency.

He said: “The problem of unemployment in my constituency, which goes from Bilborough across Bulwell to Bestwood, is still chronic.

“There’s still a lot of people looking for work, wanting work and what we need to do is find the places for them to work close to where they live.

“While it may be in some leafy suburbs employment is going down dramatically, I can tell you youth unemployment in my constituency is still very high and we have the ninth highest level of overall unemployment in the United Kingdom.”

Around 250 new jobs are being created in Nottingham thanks to Danish pension scheme ATP choosing the city as a base for its second UK office on Park Row.

The centre had its official opening on Thursday and already has 30 staff members, with dozens more being recruited over the coming months.

Morten Nilsson, the chief executive of NOW:Pensions, the company’s UK arm, said: “For us it was really critical to have a talent pool, to have good schools and a good education system producing new candidates that we could hire.

“It was also important to have an infrastructure where we can actually access, for us it’s quite easy to come from London and get to this office in Nottingham.”
