NET have released footage of young people risking their lives with trams and on tram tracks as part of a new safety awareness campaign.
The tram operator has launched the campaign to highlight dangers of ‘foolhardy behaviour’ and makes a direct plea to young people.
NET’s Head of Safety Louis Walmsley said: “Trams rank among the safest forms of public transport and we want it to stay that way.
“Although we don’t have a major problem, we do have incidents involving young people which, from time to time, simply beggar belief.
“It really comes down to a question of foolhardy behaviour and even a single incident is one too many.
“Throwing objects at passing trams and playing far too close to the tracks can put lives in danger and we need to drive that message home to young people – it’s their city’s tram network and they need to use it safely and with consideration for others.”
NET are organising a series of visits to schools close to the network armed with leaflets and a new video aimed directly at a younger audience.
Mr Walmsley said: “Most of our messages are actually a matter of common sense, but that doesn’t mean they don’t bear repeating.
“We all benefit from a few safety pointers from time to time. It’s all about promoting a better understanding of tram safety.
“For all young people, our message couldn’t be clearer – don’t put yourself and others at risk. Act responsibly…and that also means having consideration for other tram users.”

The campaign is being supported by Nottingham City Council’s youth services team, who work with young people signposted to the Youth Offending Team for anti-social behavior connected to the trams.
Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services and Local Transport Councillor Sally Longford said: “The tram is a fantastic way of getting around the city.
“It’s important our children and young people are aware of how to keep themselves and others safe around the network.
“Whether you live near the tram or only use it occasionally, people need to realise the potential dangers of messing around near trams or the track.
“This campaign will encourage the minority who behave irresponsibly to understand how their behaviour can put others at risk.”
