A 14-year-old cyclist has died following a collision with a car in Bingham.

The crash happened at around 10.15pm on Monday night on Chapel Lane, between Bingham and the old A46.

The route is still closed in both directions while officers examine the scene. The cyclist, a 14-year-old boy, died at the scene.

He is being named locally as Jack Archer – although police have not yet confirmed his identity.

Flowers have been left at the scene and police say the investigation is likely to continue at the crash site for most of the day.

Hundreds of tributes have been posted on Facebook and Twitter, with some saying Jack was a Notts County fan who lived locally.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

Police launched an appeal for witnesses and are advising drivers to avoid the area – although there is access to the Moorbridge Road industrial estate from Bingham.

A Notts Police spokesman said: “Officers are specifically interested in talking to the occupants of a second car which is thought to have passed the cyclist immediately before the collision took place.

“Did you see two vehicles, one silver car and another unidentified car in convoy?”

Police initially reported the boy’s age as 13, but this was corrected in a force statement to 14 later on Tuesday morning.

Anyone with any information is being asked to contact Notts Police on 101 quoting incident number 983 of July 25.
