Nottingham is expected to need 28% more electricity than the city uses now due to a forecast increase in demand, according to a new report.
Smart Energy GB and Cebr released a report detailing Nottingham’s forecast energy use in 2035 with gas use also expected to rise by 12%.
The Powering Future Cities report revealed Nottingham could have a higher increase in demand for electricity than Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield.
This is due to an expected surge in electric transport use
The report said: “Due to efficiency measures and greater interest in energy saving – electricity demand is falling and this is expected to continue until 2025.
“However, between 2025 and 2035, the analysis shows a sustained increase in electricity demand, due in large part to an expected surge in electric transport use.
“Our current energy system must be ready for when millions of people plug-in electric vehicles at the same time at the end of the working day.”
