Beeston gas cylinder fire causes travel disruption

People in Beeston were asked to stay indoors and travel was disrupted after a fire threatened to ignite gas cylinders.

The blaze broke out at around 10.50am on Padge Road, and engulfed a stock of acetylene cylinders inside a building.

Notts Fire and Rescue service says the fire is now out and firefighters have lifted a wide safety cordon which in place while the cylinders cooled.

Padge Road was closed and Humber road at the junction with Queens Drive was also shut until around 2pm.

East Midlands Trains said some of its services were halted during the blaze as the building is close to the Midland Main Line.

Notts Fire and Rescue Service tweeted at around 2pm that the incident is over and travel is returning to normal.

Acetylene cylinders are often used in industry, typically in welding metal, and can explode when exposed to extreme heat.
