Call for Chilwell tram signs overhaul after dozens of cyclists injured

A confusing tram line and road layout could be responsible for a series of cyclist injuries in Chilwell, an MP says.

Anna Soubry is calling for an overhaul on Chilwell High Road where around 30 cycling accidents have been reported since the tram extension opened lastĀ August.

In many of the cases riders were injured after getting their wheels trapped in the tram lines and being thrown off their bikes.

Broxtowe MP Ms Soubry says a mixture of signs, road markings and lanes for cyclists on the road is too confusing and should be changed.

“These are serious injuries – some people have lost consciousness and had concussion,” she said.

“All the cycling groups say it’s dangerous, the police have said it’s dangerous – it’s not clear where you need to go.

“It’s accepted that the signage by the road and on the road is not clear.”

She added planners have promised to put better signs in place, saying QMC figures show there have been 90 similar incidents across the city this year.

But tram operators and the city council say there is no space for a separate cycle lane on the route.

A city council spokesman said: “We’ve agreed an ‘all-party’ review of the signs and lining to ensure that cyclists are fully aware of any hazards and we also agreed to an awareness campaign.

“For those who are uncomfortable with cycling along this route, an alternative route is available which has been widely publicised.

“All parties will continue to monitor the situation in order to continually improve the provision for cyclists.”
