Cinema part of plans give Beeston’s nightlife some “oomph”

Beeston town centre cinema night-life

Plans for a revamp of Beeston’s town centre could include a cinema and as part of a new vibrant night-time economy.

Broxtowe Borough Council has discussed the ideas as part of developing the south side of the new tram interchange between Station road and Middle street.

Janet Patrick, councillor for Beeston West said: “This redevelopment is getting nearer and nearer, its related to the coming of the tram, at the moment the council has employed consultants to find out what is possible because it’s a balance between vision and practical possibilities to do with money, but the central possibility will be a cinema.”

Phase two of the tram network opened in August, taking new lines to Beeston and Clifton and raising hopes of big economic boosts for both areas.

Ms Patrick said: “It’s the night-time economy we need to boost in Beeston, it’s already a vibrant and exiting place to be but we need an oomph, particularity in the evening, places like restaurants which will give us a big lift.”

There’s a spirit of optimism around

Matt Turpin, editor of the Beestonian magazine said: “We have asked our readers many times what they would like and a cinema has consistently come out on top, people want some sort of cultural entertainment rather than a retail unit.

“I think the new businesses will do really well, there’s a spirit of optimism around, we’ve got a very active population here of people who like to get involved in what happens in Beeston.”
