A detention officer from Nottinghamshire Police has been found guilty of assaulting a man in custody.

David Flint, 47, was convicted of the attack against a handcuffed prisoner in the cells at Mansfield Police Station on November 4 2015.

Nottingham Magistrates Court was told Flint carried out the assault because the same prisoner had spat at him during a previous stay in custody at the station, on Great Central Road.

Flint denied common assault, claiming to have used “reasonable force” in the circumstances because he feared a repeat incident.

But the defence was not accepted by the court which ruled that Flint’s behaviour was unjustified.

Flint walked free from court after being given an 18-month conditional discharged and also ordered to pay £620 costs when he appeared at court on Monday.

Notts Police say the officer will now be subject to internal misconduct proceedings.
