A missing dog has been reunited with its owner after wandering to a Notts car park almost 50 miles from its home.

Border Collie Casey was found by council wardens in the car park of Waitrose on Ossington Way in Newark.

They discovered his home was in Spilsby, Lincolnshire, after scanning a microchip embedded beneath his skin.

Casey had now been returned home by staff from Newark and Sherwood District Council.

Wardens discovered his owner had been searching him for six weeks and had almost given up hope after running an appeal on Facebook.

Although there had been a number of sightings, people had struggled to catch him because of his nervous nature.

Alan Batty, who runs the council’s dog warden service, said: “We do not know how he ended up in Newark but we had one relieved and emotional owner who couldn’t wait to collect him from us.

“It was a very emotional reunion for dog and owners when they went into his kennel.”

Microchips contain key information including the keeper’s contact details.

In April it became law for all dogs to be microchipped by their owners.
