England have announced former Notts County manager Sam Allardyce as the new national team boss.

Allardyce was in charge at Meadow Lane for three seasons with his one full season resulting in record breaking promotion from Division Three in the 1997/98 season.

In that season the Magpies won the title as champions by a 19 point margin and became the first team post-war to win promotion in March.

The appointment comes just 25 days since England suffered a shock 2-1 loss in the last 16 of the Euros to Iceland with Roy Hodgson resigning.

Allardyce’s first competitive test will be a FIFA World Cup qualifier on Sunday September 4 away to Slovakia in a group that also contains Scotland.

The other three teams in England’s group are Lithuania, Malta and Slovenia.
