A new football-style banning system has excluded its first problem drinker from the city centre.

It means the person is banned from going into more than 100 pubs, clubs and bars that have signed up to the scheme.

Venues have warning cards which are given out to problem customers when they cause trouble.

Anyone who gets two cards is automatically banned from all the venues, although a ‘straight-red’ style card rule means someone can be excluded for just one serious offence, such as violence or drug use.

The idea has been developed by Nottingham BID in conjunction with Notts Police.

Banning them conveys a clear message

Neil Fincham, a director at the BID, said: “With Christmas fast approaching and more and more people likely to be in the city centre at night enjoying the festivities, it is all the more important and we are doing our best to ensure that they have a great time.

“Banning this individual conveys a very clear message that behaviour like this will not be tolerated.”

City inspector Jez Ellis of Nottinghamshire Police, said a breach of the scheme won’t be treated as police matter in itself – although anything criminal will be dealt with as normal.

He said: “We will support venues when they are enforcing this scheme by ensuring those banned are aware of their exclusion and to prevent any further offences occurring.”

Details of anyone banned are circulated to the businesses involved through Nottingham BID’s secure information sharing system.

Exclusions can be appealed, but only after an incident-free period of six months and providing that the offender has attended an alcohol awareness class run by Last Orders Alcohol Support Services.
