Nottingham College has released the first pictures of how its £58 million landmark Nottingham city centre campus development could look.
The new building is part of an ambitious £250m Southern Gateway regeneration scheme, spearheaded by Nottingham City Council and also involving the redevelopment of Broadmarsh Centre and rebuild of the adjoining bus station and car park.
If approved, it will be built on land off Canal Street, next to the tram lines and south of Nottingham Contemporary.
It will include a new performing arts centre, shops, café and training restaurant and bar.
The building will be six storeys high and the design is being led by architects Bond Bryan.
The campus is seen as pivotal to the college’s future, following its creation from a merger between New College Nottingham and Central College Nottingham.
John van de Laarschot, Nottingham College Chief Executive said: “It is our aspiration to bring to Nottingham something truly iconic, something that does not simply fit the mould of a traditional college campus, but which provides a unique space in which business and education co-exist and the relationship between the two can be strengthened.”
Matt Hutton, Chief Architect on the project from Bond Bryan said: “As an architect, it’s important to capture and understand the heritage of a particular site and having grown up in Nottingham, I’m familiar with the stories of Broadmarsh and Narrow Marsh.
“The opportunity to transform an area that was once synonymous with poverty and limited life chances into a centre that will help unlock the potential of tens of thousands of young people in the coming years, is a very rewarding prospect.”
He added: “The City Hub project has an ability to create an exciting destination for local businesses and education to mix, providing real benefit to skills and employment in the region. It is an exciting time for Nottingham and I’m extremely proud to be part of it.”
A public consultation on the plans start today (October 30) and residents and businesses in the area are being invited to dedicated consultation sessions held at Nottingham Contemporary on Friday, November 10.
People can give their views online, where plans and images are available, or they can attend the sessions at the Contemporary on the day 10.30am – 12 noon or 2pm – 5pm.
