A flood alert has been issued for central Nottingham around the River Leen and Day Brook area.

River levels on the Leen are rising, and are expected to reach 1.1 metres tonight.

The Environment Agency issued an alert at just after 1pm, saying people living near the river should be aware of the risk of flooding.

An agency spokesman said: “Flooding of low-lying agricultural land and roads is possible at areas north of Moor Bridge at Bulwell, Southwark Street meander and the Day Brook confluence in Basford.”

A flood alert is the third most serious of the three levels of warning from the agency.

This means flooding is ‘likely’, but is not as serious as a red warning, which means ‘severe’ conditions which could endanger life.

Rainfall is expected to continue throughout the next 12 hours with more than 20 millimetres worth of rain still expected to come down in the evening.

Alerts have also been issued for River Erewash and River Maun.

The orange area shows the zone of flood risk, according to Environment Agency experts.

The Environment Agency is reporting a very low risk of flooding around the Nottinghamshire area for the rest of the week, with the weather supposed to stay relatively dry after Monday.

A flood alert was last seen in Nottingham at the beginning of March, when heavy downpour saw a yellow warning issued by the Met Office.
