A historic Stapleford petrol station has stopped trading on Nottingham Road after 68 years.

Due to competition from supermarkets and a fall in sales, Sandicliffe motor group closes the filling station and shop but the garages and car dealership remain open.

The site is the home of the very first Sandicliffe garage which opened shortly after the Second World War.

We have had to close a small part of history

Managing director of Sandicliffe Reg Tutt said: “Our Stapleford garage has served millions of customers for nearly seventy years.

“The decision to close the site has been made with a heavy heart as it has been a crucial part of Nottingham’s motoring history.

“Local supermarket competition and falling sales mean we have no choice but to close the site and with it a small part of history.”

I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us

The site was bought in 1948 when there were just one million cars on the roads in Britain and was named Sandicliffe after the sandy cliff that stood behind the garage.

Speaking about those involved with the station since then, Mr Tutt said: “I’d like to thank the many drivers who have supported the business over the last 68 years and whose loyal custom will be sorely missed.

“I’d also like to thank our management and staff at the forecourt who have done a magnificent job over recent years.”
