National Justice Museum’s planned launch early next year has been postponed because of a delay in its building work.

The museum was originally planned to open in February 2017 after the Galleries of Justice was given a £1m grant to change name and expand.

However the launch will take place later in 2017 due to a delay in ‘capital works’ with the museum now set to remain open throughout January.

The museum is home to the country’s largest and most important collection of crime and punishment artefacts.

Tim Desmond, Chief Executive for the museum said: “While we have experienced a temporary delay in our capital works, we are looking forward to launching the National Justice Museum later in 2017 across all our legal and heritage sites in Nottingham, London and the North West.

“Meanwhile it is business as usual and our doors are open at the Galleries of Justice Museum so visitors can still come and be inspired to learn about their rights and responsibilities through our entertaining exhibitions and activities.”

The £1 million from Heritage Lottery funding will be spent on new exhibitions showcasing the museum’s huge collection of crime and punishment artefacts and materials – much of which is usually kept in storage.
