Veterans from the Royal Tank Regiment turned up at the Nottingham Free School to view their exhibition commemorating WW1.

Year eight students worked in pairs to produce work which would be displayed in the commemoration, the best piece of work winning a trip to the Western Front Battlefields in France.

Tom Mole, year seven and eight teacher, said: “We haven’t taught the students about WW1 yet so they had to research about it themselves in their own free time.

they were humble and grateful

“A lot of them were shocked about what happened during WW1 but they were humble and grateful for what others had done for them.”

Three members of the Nottinghamshire Royal Tank Regiment were present at the display and gave a talk about WW1.

Tom, said: “During the talk the veterans were blown away by the pupils work and now understand why it is so important to remember WW1.”

Staff studied each piece carefully before choosing their two winners, Nasua Iyamah-Arbouin and Harriet Lancley.

The winners will be visiting the battlefield in the February half term next year and will give a talk to the rest of the pupils about what they have learned on the trip.
