Plans to construct a six-storey student accommodation building on the University of Nottingham’s Jubilee campus have been approved.
The building, on Triumph Road, will contain 169 bedrooms, including 34 studio apartments.
Four existing buildings, which currently house motorcycle shops and cafés, would need to be demolished to make way for the new project, according to plans.
The application was recently approved by Nottingham City Council officers after being originally submitted in 2022.
The L-shaped building, which borders the River Leen, will accommodate groups of four, five or nine students.
The application received two objections, with both claiming that the suburb of Lenton is already saturated with students.
One local resident wrote: “Adding another student accommodation building to this area would be detrimental to the local community.
“I understand that the students need to be housed somewhere and would encourage the developers to consider locations outside of Lenton which is already saturated.”
Another said: “Whilst it is argued that the proposed footprint of the building has been substantially reduced from earlier iterations given to planners, I absolutely still consider the structure to be too large and bulky.
“In particular I don’t consider that the proposed development ‘enhances community safety’, as adding another 169 units would cause even more footfall on the Derby Road corridor.
“The proposed development will exacerbate existing problems such as street drinking and other forms of anti-social behaviour.”
Concerns were also raised about the fact that only four parking spaces will be provided.
The developer says students will likely use other forms of transport, although objectors said they will inevitably bring cars and displace local residents.
The application was submitted by Cardiff-based developer DPP Planning.
It claims that the project would provide high-quality student accommodation that will enhance the area.
The application also notes that it is no larger than other student accommodation buildings in the area.
Council officers granted full permission for the development.
