Playground at the Playhouse: Nottingham’s brand new performance festival for local talent

Local artists and theatre companies have met at Nottingham Playhouse as part of the very first Playground Festival.

The festival, which runs from 2-7 October, involves 11 new shows making their debut at the venue, with every one of them being written and performed by artists from Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

The idea was brought to the Playhouse by Associate Artist Gareth Morgan.

“I’ve been working as a producer and curating the festival – so working with the artists and selecting some of the artists alongside the team here,” he said.

Louise White is performing in one of the plays, The Dead Sea, and says this kind of event is long overdue.

She said: “It’s a really good platform for local artists to make relationships with the Playhouse and start that journey, but also to showcase some stuff that so far we’ve had to go elsewhere to do.”

Writer Hugh Dichmont, whose play ‘The War On Terry’ is being shown as part of the festival, added: “It’s always been the case that artists in the past have had to move away from the city to make work.

“There’s always been a bit of a gap there and Gareth has been one of the main champions of regional talent for years.”

Tickets are already sold out for some of the shows, but there are still a few available.
