Video: PC Jon Cooper was injured in the line of duty

A police officer suffered a four inch cut to the head after being injured in the line of duty in Clifton – but still managed to detain a suspect.

On Tuesday (September 26), PC Jon Cooper was on patrol when he spotted a vehicle being driven erratically.

He then chased a man on foot in order to detain him during which he sustained a four inch cut to the top of his head.

PC Cooper struggled to see as blood ran down his face and called for backup while successfully detaining the suspect.

As a result, a man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, possession of cannabis with intent to supply and driving offences.

Neighbourhood Inspector Donna Lawton said: “There aren’t many jobs that would leave you open to serious harm but everyday officers put their lives on the line.

“Regardless of the rigourous training they go through, officers can still find themselves in harm’s way after acting on their natural instincts to keep people safe and bring people to justice.

“PC Cooper showed tremendous initiative while on duty that day and I commend his bravery.

“When an officer is injured in the line of duty, it not only affects that individual but also their families.

“It is completely unacceptable for officers to be assaulted at work and it will not be tolerated.

“I wish PC Cooper a speedy recovery and I thank him for his brave actions, even though I am sure he will say he is just doing his job.”
